Paper Boat Heart

You were a house of rain I was a paper roof Every drip you said my name And I believed it too You wore a golden bruise Under your Sunday skin I held your hand like a match Trying to light you from within
Now the table’s half a moon And your chair looks like a wound I keep serving up my words But they just fall through the room
You were my paper boat I was the open sea You held for just a while Then you disappeared from me You were my paper boat I was the open sea I still hear your edges fold When the wind comes back to me
Your goodbye was a winter coat Left on a summer floor Too warm to keep, too cold to hold So I left it by the door My chest is a locked-up drawer Full of letters cut in half I keep the key on my tongue But I still can’t make it laugh
Now the table’s half a moon And your chair looks like a wound I keep serving up my words But they just fall through the room
You were my paper boat I was the open sea You held for just a while Then you disappeared from me You were my paper boat I was the open sea I still hear your edges fold When the wind comes back to me
If love was glass, we dropped it If love was glass, we dropped it And watched it turn to dust If hearts were maps, we tore ours Right where it pointed us I’m not angry, I’m just weather Stuck behind your fading door Even now my broken harbor Waits for waves that won’t come shore
You were my paper boat I was the open sea You held for just a while Then you disappeared from me You were my paper boat I was the open sea I still hear your edges fold When the wind comes back to me
